May: Shamrock, TX to Great Bend, KS We evsaluate our synoptic map...although we are sitting near the dryline, I'd say the chances of anyt storms going off near the dryline today would be as likley as finding an iceblock on the floor of Death Valley. Despite better moisture over central south Oklahoma, the cap is far too strong. After heading east and encountering I35 south of Oklahoma City, we decide to head north to Nebraska for expected severe weather over the following 2 days. We remain rather astonished at the safety aspect of road users in America...the motorcyclists without helmets, mum and dad with no safety belts on and kids on teh back in an open tray...aoll of it appears customary...not to mention the hordes that have mobile phones stuck to their ears while driving and negotiating traffic jams. As we head north through Oklahoma City it seems that the whole of Saturday appears to be a peak hour! with bumper to bumper traffic just about everywhere. We eventuaolly escape the vehicle hordes and emerge on the Kansas border. This section of I35 becomes a toll road and we found them to be good links for fast running, and they're not expensive and as long as you;ve go the right change you're right. The only drawback with toll roads is that they have limited off and on ramps which makes them a trap if you;re chasing storms...you cannot stop on a toll road. Today is primarily a transit day. We head north of Witchita to Newton and head west and watch a cloudless sunset as we arrive at Great Bend. |
